Send assignment photos in order to your teacher

PicOrder started with an assignment that arrived out of order. Here is how to send the pages so your teacher reads them in sequence: as one PDF, or as numbered photos.

Short answer

To send assignment photos in order, either combine the pages into one PDF with a scanner app, or put the page number into each photo before you send it. Loose photos on WhatsApp, in Google Classroom or attached to an email have no guaranteed order, so a teacher can open page 4 first. A number in the picture tells them where every page belongs.

Use PicOrder. It stamps a page number into each photo in the order you choose, so your teacher reads page 1 to page 8 however WhatsApp, Classroom or the email arranges them. Free for up to 10 pages at a time, which covers most assignments, and nothing is uploaded. Try it free in your browser →

Page four arrived first

You photograph eight handwritten pages, one by one, and send them to your teacher. They open the chat and the first thing they see is page 4. Then 1, then 7. Now they have to work out the order from your handwriting, and an answer that runs from page 3 onto page 4 reads like nonsense when page 4 comes first.

PicOrder started exactly like this: pages of an assignment, photographed and sent in to be marked, arriving out of order. The usual fix is to send the pages again one at a time, a message for each, so the order holds. It works, and it fills the chat. What we wanted was a number on each page, put there before sending, so the order could not be lost. Nothing did only that, so we built it.

Why the pages arrive out of order

The order you tap your photos in is not stored in the photos. It is a list the sending app holds, and most apps drop it when they hand the batch on. Then each app shows the batch its own way:

  • WhatsApp sends the batch together, but once the photos are saved they are usually sorted by when they arrived, which is the same moment for all of them. A teacher with forty students’ pages in one group has no way to tell them apart.
  • Google Classroom lets you attach several photos, but its help pages document no way to rearrange them once attached.
  • Microsoft Teams chat can preview several images in the wrong order; a Microsoft moderator confirmed there is no setting for it.
  • Email leaves the order to the teacher’s email app, and different apps show attachments differently.

None of this is you doing it wrong. The full explanation is in why photos arrive out of order.

PDF or photos?

If your college portal, LMS or teacher asks for one PDF, send one PDF. A PDF keeps its pages in the order they were added, and it is one file to download and mark. The next section shows how to make one on your phone.

If the teacher takes photos — in a WhatsApp group, in Classroom, by email — number the pages. Photos are quicker, they open instantly on any phone, and with a number in each one the order cannot go missing.

Making a PDF on your phone

Every phone can do this without extra apps. In each, scan the pages in order, because most of them have no step to rearrange pages afterwards.

  • iPhone: in Notes, tap the attachment button and choose Scan Documents, or in Files, tap More and choose Scan Documents. Keep scanning to add pages; it saves as a PDF.
  • Android: in the Google Drive app, tap the camera button to scan. Add a page for each sheet and save it as a PDF.
  • Google Classroom on iPhone: in the assignment, Add work includes a Scanner that combines photos into a single document.
  • Microsoft Teams Assignments: on your phone, attach with Scan to PDF. It is the one scanner here that documents a Reorder step, so you can fix a page you scanned out of turn.

If a guide tells you to use Microsoft Lens: Microsoft retired it in early 2026 and it has left the app stores. Microsoft points to the scan feature in the OneDrive app instead.

Sending photos: number the pages

PicOrder puts the page number into each photo, in the corner, so it travels with the page wherever it goes.

  1. Photograph each page flat, in good light, with the whole sheet in the frame.
  2. Open PicOrder in your phone’s browser and choose the photos in page order. If one is out of place, drag it to the right spot.
  3. Tap Share and pick WhatsApp, or download them and attach them to the email or the upload.

The files are also named in order — 1_…, 2_… — so a teacher who downloads them to a folder sees them in sequence there too. It runs on your phone and nothing is uploaded.

Uploading photos to Google Classroom

Open the assignment, go to Your work, and add your files: Add or create then File on a computer, or Add work then Upload in the app. You can choose several photos at once. Before you tap Turn in, look at the attached list. Classroom documents no option to rearrange attachments, so if the pages are numbered in the picture, the order in the list stops mattering.

If your teacher prefers one file, use Classroom’s scanner on iPhone, or make a PDF first and attach that.

Before you submit

  • Name and roll number on page 1. In a WhatsApp group with forty students, page 1 is how your teacher knows the set is yours.
  • Every page in the shot. Lay the sheet flat, hold the phone straight above it, and check the edges are not cut off.
  • Count them. Send eight pages, say so: “Assignment 3, pages 1 to 8.” With Pro, PicOrder can show the total in the number — 3/8 — so a missing page is obvious.
  • Long assignment? The free version numbers 10 pages at a time. Number pages 11 onwards in a second batch, starting from 11.

Scanning a document rather than an assignment — a contract, a form, a lease? That is sending the pages of a document in order.

Common questions

How do I send assignment pages in order on WhatsApp?

Number the pages in the photos before you send them. WhatsApp does not keep the order you select, so put a page number into each photo with PicOrder, or send one PDF as a document. Either way your teacher can read the pages in sequence.

Can I upload multiple photos to Google Classroom at once?

Yes. In the assignment, open Your work and add files: Add or create, then File on a computer, or Add work, then Upload in the app. You can choose several photos together. Classroom documents no way to rearrange them, so number the pages or combine them into one PDF.

Should I send my assignment as a PDF or as photos?

If your college portal or teacher asks for one PDF, send a PDF and scan the pages in order. If the teacher accepts photos on WhatsApp, Classroom or email, photos are fine as long as each page is numbered.

What replaced Microsoft Lens?

Microsoft retired Lens in early 2026 and removed it from the app stores. Microsoft points to the scan feature in the OneDrive app instead. iPhone Notes and Files, and the Google Drive app on Android, can also scan pages into a PDF.
