The 5 best apps to add numbers to photos in 2026

Five numbering tools compared on the thing that matters: does the number go on in the order you chose?

Short answer

Five tools number photos in sequence. Which is best depends on whether you are numbering photos you already have or photos you are about to take, and on what device. For a batch that already exists, the two that matter are PicOrder and, on Android, Auto Numbering Sequence Stamp. For numbering while you shoot, Auto Stamper. For a Windows desktop, FastStone. Add Numbers to Photos is good but only sold in some App Store regions.

Use PicOrder. It is the only one of the five that lets you drag the photos into order before a single number is added, and the only one that works on iPhone, Android and a computer without installing anything. Free for up to 10 photos. Try it free in your browser →

A note on who wrote this. PicOrder is ours. We put it first because, by the criteria below, it is the best fit for the job this page is about, and we have said plainly where the others beat it. Every claim about another tool comes from that tool’s own listing or documentation, read on 8 October 2026, and is linked so you can check it. Prices and ratings change; treat them as a snapshot.

How we ranked them

“Add numbers to photos” usually means one of two things: you are about to take a series and want each shot numbered as you go, or you already have a batch and need it numbered in a particular order. The second is the harder problem and the more common one, so the criteria lean that way.

  • Numbers a batch you already have. Not just photos taken with the app’s own camera.
  • Lets you set the order first. A number is only useful if it is the right number. If the tool numbers in whatever order it finds the photos, you are back to doing it by hand.
  • Puts the number in the picture. A number in the image survives being sent, saved and forwarded. A number in the filename does not survive most chats.
  • Where it runs. iPhone, Android, a computer, or all three.
  • What it costs and what it nags you with. Free tiers, ads, and what sits behind the paywall.

We did not score on looks, and we did not use star ratings as a criterion, though we report them where a listing shows one.

1. PicOrder

Best for: numbering a batch you already have, in the order you decide, and sending it anywhere.

PicOrder starts from the step the other tools leave to you. You pick the photos, drag them into the order you want, and only then does it number them. The number is stamped into each picture, bottom-right by default, and the files are named 01_, 02_, 03_ to match, so a folder sorts the same way a chat reads.

It runs in the browser, which is the part people do not expect: open picorder.app/app on an iPhone, an Android phone or a laptop and it works the same way with nothing installed. The numbering happens on the device and the photos are never uploaded. Native iPhone and Android apps are on the way; the browser version is live now.

What to know. The free version handles 10 photos at a time and lets you set the number’s size. Pro removes the limit and adds six colours, four typefaces, a choice of corner, a “3/24” style that shows the total, and the option to turn numbers off and keep only the filenames. It does not number while you shoot, and it does not add dates or locations; it does one thing.

Price: free up to 10 photos. Pro is $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $59.99 once. Pricing.

2. Auto Stamper

Best for: numbering photos as you take them, with a date, time or location on the same shot.

Auto Stamper is a stamping camera. Its App Store listing describes a 5-in-1 stamp: date and time, GPS, logo, signature and a sequence number, applied to photos “clicked with Auto Stamper Camera.” If you are walking a site and want shot 1, shot 2, shot 3 numbered the moment you take them, with the date alongside, it is the most complete option on either phone.

What to know. The listing describes stamps on photos taken inside the app. It does not say whether you can number photos already in your library, so if your batch already exists, check that before you rely on it. There is no reordering: the sequence is the order you shot in.

Price and platform: free on iPhone with a $4.99 in-app purchase to unlock everything, rated 4.5 from 239 ratings, version 1.2.17 from April 2025, iOS 13 or later. An Android version with the number stamp is on Google Play; we could not open that listing to confirm its rating or price.

3. Add Numbers to Photos

Best for: the simplest possible numbering on iPhone, if your region’s App Store has it.

This one is exactly what its name says. Its listing calls it “a tiny app for a very specific need” that “loads your photos and adds numbers to them, in order, automatically.” You can change the starting number, type a number per photo for a custom sequence, and choose where the number sits. It is free with no in-app purchases listed.

What to know. The listing does not mention reordering by dragging, so the order is whatever order the app loads them in; the per-photo numbers are the workaround. The bigger catch is availability: on 8 October 2026 the app loaded on the Korean App Store and returned “not found” on the US, UK and Canadian stores. If it is not in your store, no amount of searching will find it.

Price and platform: free, iPhone, version 3.0.3. The store showed 5 stars from 2 ratings, which is too few to mean much.

4. Auto Numbering Sequence Stamp

Best for: Android users who want the most numbering options, and do not mind ads.

Made by Master Apps Lab, this is the most configurable numbering tool on Android. Its Google Play listing says it stamps a sequence onto photos from its camera or from your gallery, counting up or down, with a prefix and suffix, a repeat option, several fonts, and adjustable size, position, colour and border. For something like numbering a stack of student ID photos it has everything.

What to know. It carries ads and has in-app purchases, and one reviewer on the listing notes the stamp defaults to red and changing the colour needs the paid upgrade. Google Play showed a 2.1-star rating from roughly 115 reviews when we checked, which is low for the category, and it was last updated in December 2025. Nothing in the listing describes setting the order before numbering.

Price and platform: free with ads, paid upgrade, Android only.

5. FastStone Photo Resizer

Best for: hundreds of photos on a Windows PC, numbered in the filename and, with a second pass, in the image.

FastStone’s batch tool is free for personal and educational use, and its feature list includes “rename images with sequential number” and adding “text, watermark and border effects” in batch. Version 4.5 is from December 2025. For a folder of a few hundred scans it will outrun any phone app.

What to know. The sequential numbering is a rename, so it changes the filename, not the picture. Getting the number into the image takes two passes: rename with a sequence first, then run the text tool and have it print the filename. Users’ guides describe doing this; it is not a one-click feature. The order is the order the files sort in, so arrange them before you start. Windows only, and there is no phone version.

Price and platform: free for personal use, Windows.

What did not make the list

  • Markup on iPhone and Android’s photo editor. Both can put a number on a photo, one photo at a time, with no batch mode. Fine for three photos; not a tool for thirty. How that goes wrong at photo six.
  • Watermarkly and other batch text tools. They apply one piece of text to many photos. We could not confirm that any of them counts up per photo, which is the whole requirement.
  • GPS Date & Time Stamp Camera and similar. Several Android stamp cameras list a sequence option alongside date and location. They number at capture only, which makes them alternatives to Auto Stamper rather than to the rest.
  • Lightroom and Bridge. Excellent at sequential filenames on export; their text watermarks are fixed text, so the number does not go into the picture without extra work. Professional tools for a different job.

Which one to pick

  • You have the photos and the order matters: PicOrder. Drag them into order, number them, send.
  • You are about to take the photos and want a date on them too: Auto Stamper.
  • You are on Android and want every numbering option: Auto Numbering Sequence Stamp, if the ads and the rating do not put you off.
  • You have hundreds of files on a Windows PC: FastStone, and accept the two-step process for numbers in the image.
  • You are on iPhone in a region that has it and want the simplest thing: Add Numbers to Photos.

If you are not sure which situation you are in, it is almost always the first. The number that matters is the one that tells someone else what order to look in, and that only works if the order was right before the number went on.

Common questions

What is the best free app to add numbers to photos?

For a batch you already have, PicOrder is free for up to 10 photos and runs in the browser on any phone or computer, with the number stamped into each picture in the order you drag them into. On Android, Auto Numbering Sequence Stamp is free with ads and offers more styling options.

Can I add numbers to photos on iPhone without an app?

Yes, with Markup in the Photos app, one photo at a time. There is no batch mode and Markup edits cannot be copied between photos, so for more than a handful it is faster to use a tool built for it, such as PicOrder in your browser.

Which photo numbering app keeps the order I selected?

PicOrder lets you drag the photos into order before numbering, so the number matches your sequence. Camera-based tools such as Auto Stamper number in the order you shoot. The other apps in this comparison do not describe reordering in their listings.

Do the numbers survive sending on WhatsApp or by email?

If the number is stamped into the image, yes: it is part of the picture and cannot be stripped. Numbers in the filename usually do not survive messaging apps, which rename files on arrival. All five tools here put the number in the image; FastStone needs a second step to do it.
